Inspired by the Purple Revolution in and around Jammu, encouraging farmers to cultivate Lavender.

The Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) recently launched the “Purple Revolution” in various villages in and around Jammu.

The revolution aims at encouraging farmers, who previously cultivated Maize, to start growing and selling Lavender. A lot of these farmers are now earning five times more than they used to, due to the shift.

Lavender’s easy-to-grow properties and the area’s apt climatic conditions makes it popular with farmers. One hectare of land can generate as much as 30 to 45 litres of lavender oil, which is in high demand as an essential aromatic oil. Many farmers in and around Jammu are starting to cultivate the crop, often growing it alongside apple orchards.
